Canada, third world country
Sept. 24, 2006I guess I have heard enough about how Americans believe they are the center of the world (which is wrong) and I'm already used to this kind of statement, but I was once again supprised when hearing a professor saying that "Canada is a third world country".
Many of us from China see these two countries almost the same, at least Canada qualifies to be the backyard of US. Now you know what Americans have in their mind, third world country.
Few weeks ago I went to a reception in a big law firm and talked to a senior partner there. He asked me if this is my first time being in the US. I said yes but I visited Canada quite a few times last year. He said that's very much different. His tone told me that he doesn't think Canada is even comparable to US. Well, he didn't go that far to state that Canada is a third world country though...

The comparison between Canada and the U.S. somehow reminds me the difference between Macau and HongKong.回复: Canada, third world country

By contrast with this, I was once in another class where they teach PRC (P. R. China) law. I was impressed by what I heard there. While talking about China, the professor said "you should never evaluate another culture with your own values". 『崇拜』Evaluating other countries with their own values, this is exactly the problem of most Americans.
I guess the situation in Canada is a little better because Canada has some many immigrants.

i like this professor too though i'm not interested in what he teaches. i felt 『大汗』 『大汗』 in his class when he talked about Chinese Constitution and 毛选. he assigned Mao's article to students, Mao's article in English. i had a glance to those articles and immediately『我晕』 『我晕』

:-D he knew. he's smart enough to avoid this topic. see what he assigned to students for reading, samples:
Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung), "On the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People(正确处理人民内部矛盾)" (Feb. 27, 1957)
Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung), "On the People’s Democratic Dictatorship" (June 30, 1949), in Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung, Vol. IV (1975) (毛选: 论人民民主专政)

(I don't know what this one could be. seems like人民日报社论?)
